La Laguna University

A Unique Place to Study

La Laguna University is located on Tenerife in the center of the Canary Islands. Due to its privileged geographical location west of the northwestern coast of Africa, the beauty of the landscape, and the mild climate, the Canary Islands attract lots of tourists throughout the year. However, the islands look back on an exiting history and the university celebrated its 200th anniversary as a public university in 1992. In addition to the curriculum at the medical school, the University’s 55 departments offer 21 other degree programs. At present, about 24.000 students are enrolled. Bringing Telemedicine to the Real World

The Center of Advanced Technology on Image Analysis (C.A.T.A.I.) has evolved to one of the leading telemedicine sites in the European Community. In its well-known telemedicine courses, C.A.T.A.I actively promotes transeuropean training and licensing to provide telemedicine services in the EU. Professor Olga Ferrer-Roca has edited the first International Handbook of Telemedicine. In October 1999, Prof. Ferrer Roca’s research group was awarded the first Chair of Telemedicine by the UNESCO to start a worldwide promotion of telemedicine to improve education and health care in underdeveloped areas.
